Dear Members of the Juilliard Community,
The Juilliard Department of Public Safety is responsible for safety and security within the Irene Diamond Building. In fulfilling that responsibility, we provide the Juilliard community with information regarding security operations as well as communicate other security-related information that is intended to help keep you safe. Please take a moment to review the following, and keep this information handy for future reference.
Security and Safety Within the Irene Diamond Building
The Public Safety team employs uniformed officers who are licensed by the State of New York and are trained to respond to emergencies. At least one uniformed officer is always present at the main desk in the lobby of the Irene Diamond Building.
Uniformed officers are also located at the 65th and 66th Street building entrances when those entrances are open. The Public Safety Main Desk can always be reached via one of the following methods:
- Call (212) 496-4911 from any phone
- Call ext. 246 or 247 from a Juilliard landline
- Use the RED phones located throughout the building
Public Safety uses other methods to help maintain a safe and secure environment. Specifically, various technologies such as CCTV and an ID-based access control system are used to monitor the environment and to restrict access to only authorized individuals, respectively. In addition, an NYPD uniformed officer is frequently present inside the building. These officers provide added protection and enhance the school’s emergency response capability.
Your Juilliard-issued ID is an important credential and should be carried with you at all times when you’re inside the building. It enables you to enter and exit public entrances, access various internal locations, and use the practice rooms. Beginning Monday, September 23, your ID will also be required to move between floors after 6pm Monday through Friday and all day on weekends. We will send an email to the community when this protocol is in place. Importantly, never lend your ID to anyone for any reason, and report a lost or stolen ID immediately to any uniformed officer.
Please note that the building hours of operation are as follows:
- Weekdays: 8am-midnight
- Saturdays: 8am-11pm
- Sundays: 11am -11pm
Security and Safety Within the Rose Building
Lincoln Center Security is responsible for security in the Rose Building as well as the Lincoln Center campus. Lincoln Center Security officers are always present in the Rose Building lobby and at the entrance to the 11th floor. The Central Security Desk at Lincoln Center can be reached by calling (212) 875-5520.
Medical and Life-Threatening Emergencies
IN CASE OF A MEDICAL OR OTHER LIFE-THREATENING EMERGENCY, CALL 9-1-1 AND REQUEST IMMEDIATE ASSISTANCE.
If possible, after the call to 9-1-1, contact the Department of Public Safety and provide your current location. A Juilliard Public Safety officer will be dispatched to provide assistance.
Active Shooter Scenarios
Although the likelihood of a violent intruder inside the Irene Diamond Building is low, it is best to be prepared for any eventuality. To that end, the Department of Public Safety has taken measures to address this threat. As noted above, a uniformed New York City police officer is frequently located within the building. We maintain close contact with Lincoln Center Security who has a large security presence on the Lincoln Center campus. We also have emergency communication systems in place to disseminate notifications to the community in the event of an emergency.
If a violent person with a weapon is inside the building you should hear a special announcement over the PA system. If you hear such a message or if you otherwise become aware of an active shooter scenario, the following is the protocol to follow:
RUN: Leave the building as quickly as possible if you believe it is safe to do so. Find the nearest available exit and proceed outside to safety.
HIDE: If it is not safe to leave the building, locate a nearby room and hide. It is preferable to hide in a room that locks, e.g., practice rooms and some offices and rest rooms, but this may not be an option. If the door does not lock, use furniture or another heavy object to barricade the door. Keep absolutely quiet and silence your mobile phone. Listen to the public address (PA) system for an announcement that it is safe to leave or follow the instructions of the police who will be arriving shortly.
FIGHT: As a last resort, and if and only if your life is in imminent danger, you should defend yourself in any way possible. Look for an object to throw or use a makeshift weapon and fight as aggressively as possible for as long as necessary. To reiterate, you should only fight if running and hiding are not possible.
